Vroom, vroom! WOW it is the first time I get to drive my race car! I am eight years old sitting in the trailer remembering everything my dad had told me, stage shallow, leave on the bottom bulb, and know where the finish line is. All of these things were what he had told me when we would be at home, in the trailer, or ha-ha in my dreams. I know I was only eight but it is the most vivid image I have. Sitting on the trailer door looking at everyone who passes by, the smell of the all of the cars warming up and how every new racer was acting. We are all so little then it is kind of hard to remember the first night at Rocky Mountain Raceways!
POP! SNAP! VROOM! Were all the things you heard in your car while waiting for your turn to go down the track. Well with the slow cars like mine all you heard was putt, putt, putt, and vroom! It was very interesting. Anyways, my first time I hit the gas peddle was the most exhilarating thing for an eight year old. I mean, WAHOO 13.42 seconds. That was fast to me.
I remember my parents coming down when I was done, “did you have fun?” Of course I did who wouldn’t of? This was defiantly at my top 100’s of happiest moments of my life.
That day not everything was so happy. A girl my same age had not a clue what she was doing. She come flying down the track at TOP speed. She had panicked and her first instinct was to turn the corner. Well she did, she t-boned another car and went into the ditch on the other side of the track. I was dead silent, nobody spoke. The emergency crew came racing down the track, lights shining, sirens a roar people screaming and rushing to help the girl.
Everyone was in awe of what just happened. Questions were high. Is she going to be ok, how come she didn’t know where to go? Everyone wanted to know the answers. I being only eight was very scared. I knew that could of happen to anyone at anytime. I was so scared.
It turns out in the end her dad hadn’t showed her where to slow down and she freaked at the end and kept it full throttle. She was fine and still races today.
It made me realize that I was getting myself into a very dangerous situation and I needed to be safe. I have now been racing for seven years and I have come such a long way. From 13 seconds to now 7. I am very proud of all the accomplishments I have made and I hope in the future I can add more to my list. Racing is like that first bite of chocolate cake…addicting!
