My snapshot picture is from one of my favorite books, "The Quilt Makers Gift." In this enchanting picture is an old dainty, fragile woman. She is all alone with only the calming noise of the ocean to comfort her. This woman looks up into the sky smiling. A cat sits wrapped around the woman's legs. Her hair blows in the gentle breeze softly skimming her face. She feels as if she can taste the cold breeze coming in to greet her mouth. My feet are getting splashed by the down poor of the water running into the rock. If you listen very carefully you can hear the song that the waves sing as they shift, rolling over into the deep mysterious water. The tips of these mini waves were frosted with snow. With the brilliant ray of the sun playing a game of tag with the clouds weaving in and out of them. Every time the water touches her it gives her the thrill of chills running through her. The quilt maker is standing on a small rock, with perfect balance. You can see when she inhales she is taking in the lovely smell of her surroundings. There is the delicious air that has the scent of the salty taste of the sea. Then there is a different sound, the sound of restless wings, fighting through the wind. A little blue jay trying its best to not let the wind get him off course. The lady let him land on her soft hand. He was as cold as an ice cube. The lady felt sorry for this poor little fellow. So as delicately as possible she tears a piece of her heavy, deep dark blue skirt. Puts it around the bird, as a jacket to keep him warm. Yes, she is stranded out there in the middle of nowhere, but that nowhere is what she can make that somewhere.
You see right before she was here she was with the King. The King had placed this delicate old woman here, to die or to drown. This lady was one of the best quilt makers in the land. He being very spoiled demanded her to make him one of her beautiful, snuggly, warm quilts. She told him once he gave away all the things he had, then would she give him on of her quilts. The king gave her another chance, but since the King failed to give away his other treasures, she told him no.
Right after this scene millions of birds came and swept her away as a fairy tale prince had come to rescue his princess of what would of ended up to be a tragedy. These magical birds wanted to thank her for her simple kindness to one of their dear friends. (The bird she had made a little coat for.) They went and found land and placed her up in a beautiful tree. She started making all these little birds these coats. All the while she was happy and smiling. The king felt bad about leaving her out there, so the next day he went out to find her, but before he went out with his soldiers in the boats, he saw her in a tree!
This picture has one of the biggest impacts on me. This woman always made the best of where she was at and what fate she was to be led to. She was very positive. Even while she could accidentally slip in the water and drown at any moment she is still able to help this poor bird. I hope someday I will be able to have some of the quilt makers talents when I am older. She soaked I n all the many brilliant creations in the scenery she was in at that moment. It is amazing the attitude she gives. I love this book and highly recommend it.
